"listen to our ground commanders" ? I don't think so. One of the major hurdles to this idea is that there is a significant majority of the body politic that are ironically, antiestablishment. Their view of members of the military fall into two categories. One, the ridiculous caricature of a general from the movie "Dr. Strange Love" and the other is the racist-redneck-trigger-happy-psychopathic-killer-Jr. Enlisted guy or the po’ black boy who couldn’t afford shoes so he done got tricked into dying fo’ the white-man’s cause. If you don’t agree, look at some of the comments that John Kerry made or just read a little in the Daily Kos.
The problem is not that they don’t have the information but it’s that their filter that they use when viewing the world is so vastly different from the rest of us (military folks and Yon readers and the like). No, you would have to readjust their entire world view before they can see the truth in Iraq. They don’t trust the military and the military population makes them nervous (just like social justice professors at UC Berkeley make me nervous).
This being said, I hope someone takes you up on their offer. But I’m not going to hold my breath.
Good luck Mr. Yon
