Joint ANSF/Coalition Forces Air Assault Operation Leads to Drug Cache Find, Killing of High-Value Insurgent
ZHARAY DISTRICT, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces partnered with coalition forces, conducted a two-day air assault operation August 23 – 25, to disrupt insurgent networks in the area, while killing an insurgent believed to be a member of a marksmen’s cell operating in the area.
Upon reaching the objective near the village of Kotizi in southern Zharay district, Soldiers conducted a thorough search of several compounds, and more than 4,000 pounds of illegal narcotics, including marijuana, hashish, and opium were found and destroyed on scene.
The Afghan and coalition forces were also engaged by insurgents using small arms fire, at least 12 times during the two-day operation. In one firefight, the element was shot at by a trained enemy marksman, who was subsequently killed by a coalition forces’ sniper. When the forces arrived to secure the enemy weapons and conduct a battle damage assessment, they found an AK-74 assault rifle with a weapons scope positioned on top.
On the rapid operation, approximately 40 soldiers from the 3rd Kandak, 3rd Brigade, 205th Afghan National Army Corps, partnered with 160 Soldiers from Combined Task Force Spartan’s 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment.
The village of Kotizi served as an enemy operations hub, according to Lt. Col. Greg Anderson, commander, 2-87 Infantry, and the air assault operation there severely disrupted the insurgents’ supply and command capabilities, he said.
An air assault operation is a swift military insertion by helicopter, which denies the insurgents freedom of movement throughout Zharay and Maiwand districts of Kandahar province, while also finding and detaining their leaders and destroying supplies.
