Michael's Dispatches

Dishonorable Disclosures

19 August 2012

Many people have alerted me to a copyright violation of my work in this video. Thank you. There is a clear violation. And for that, for starters, I could demand that the video be removed from the Internet until my work is removed. Refusal to do so could have serious consequences. The video has had nearly two million views in three days, and so monetary compensation would be a no-brainer. In particular, I do not allow my work to be used for politics on any side.

There have been some serious OPSEC violations, and this video makes an important point. However, inclusion of my work indicates inclusion of me with people I do not know. (Not to mention that inclusion of my work is illegal).

We are considering options and attempting to make contact with the producer.

The "leader" of this "non-partisan" group was forced to admit that he is a birther and believer in the craziest-of-the crazy conspiracy theories. You don't want your name and reputation to be associated in any way with these folks. What could have been a creditable story is now just an embarrassing smear job put out by some actual nutters.

Chris, wrong leader of group. You are speaking about Larry Bailey who is the leader of SOS, not OPSEC. Get facts straight.

I don't know who the head of the outfit ism I thought it was the failed Republican Congressional former SEAL Ben Smith. The birther is MG (Ret.) Vallely whose writings for the last 4 years make amusing reading. Listen closely, did you hear a whole bunch of leaks? What you heard was a hidge podge of about 4 leak stories where at least did not originate in the United States. STUXNET was discovered by a Russian anti-virus security company based in Moscow. The poor doctor, sentenced to years was not picked up because of a Washington leak. First, his project stuck out like a sore thumb. Criticize the CIA for not exfiltrating the doctor and his family immediately after the raid. Do you think that ISI is stupid? The first styory about the Saudi double-agent came from a foreign news source. The CIA burn-out seems to have forgotten that we lost a stealth helicopter on that raid. Did he want Obama to fly in and get it out? The jerk Master Sergeant says that the President/C in C had "nothing to do with the raid is a dumbass. Who authorized the raid? Who said that they could invade another country? Who authorized them to kill someone? Who create a direct command relationship between the CIA and JSOC? These were Prtesidential Findings. The same instrument that other Presidents have used to authorize clandestine and covert missions and the killing of foreign nationals.

Who would the Republicans have blamed if the mission had failed? The men who executed it? The dog? I don't think so. Leadership is a two-edged sword. If you succeed you're great and if you fail like Jimmy Carter - you are out of office.

Do you really think that these guys are concerned about OPSEC? If so, why did they wait until the election campaign to release this propaganda? Duh.If you want people to shut up (which is what SEC Gates said to dumbass Donilon) then put it out immediately to stem these non-existent leaks. And, what did the President say to those Hollywood film makers? The guys in the video sure as hell don't know. Lastly, the SEALs have dominated direct action missions in Afghanistan while Delta has been occupied elsewhere. Funny, you don't hear squat about there missions. Maybe the Navy like to talk about its missions more than the Army does? We just don't know do we?

Michael, I'm shocked that you ran this political bullshit on your site. What did they steal - a photo?

The real truth is well summed up by Peter Bergen here, but I don't expect it to get two million hits:
'The film "Dishonorable Disclosures" gets even sillier. At one point one of the former officers interviewed for the film charges that the Obama administration "divulged to the world we are using drone technology." The fact that the United States uses drones in Pakistan is one of the world's worst kept secrets.'

    Knee jerk anti-Obama screed expected in .... 2 .... 1 ....

Please don't do anything that will get this video censored or taken off YouTube or the Internet.

There are important points made in this video, and while there may or may not be improper use of your material, it is a very small part of this video - you'd be throwing the baby out with the bathwater if you tried to pressure YouTube and others to take the video down.

Your material was important and these people wisely used it for a video with an important message. I'd hope you'd celebrate that fact and not criticize it.

This video is foul and repugnant. It is an unmitigated attack upon our President by extremist right wing ideologs whose purpose and intent is to defeat a competent and effective leader who has restored world confident in the USA.
I have two sons who have devoted 8 yrs of duty to this Country, one 25 years as a special ops operative and the other as a military pilot.
This video is yet another piece of trash in the "tradition" (likely by at least some of the same authors of the Swift boating extremist right wing "patriots" who spent millions to besmirch John Kerry's Silver Star as though it was given out like a free candy bar; the foul, damnable blaggards who branded a sitting US Senator (Max Cleland) who lost three limbs in battle in Vietnam, as a "coward" and praised his opponent (current Saxby Chambliss-draft dodger) as a true patriot; and the same who glorified "W" (a deserter)who strutted like some peacock in his flight suit for his photo op. None of the folks in this video ever complained about the above true outrages.

He was "forced" to admit he is a birther? Really? How was he forced - waterboarding?

Yea, it's a real lunatic that is skeptical about a birth certificate - real nut job. Don't know about the rest of you, but I spent 10 years and a day in the Marine Corps to protect this country and CONTITUTION. I have every damn right in the world to make sure the jackass sending our troops into harms way is at the very least, a citizen by birth.

Just because you bought into the Obama Newspeak, don't expect me to.

The decision is Michael's.... no doubt he is aware that this video makes a very important point BUT - Michael needs to survive to bring us the inside story so only Michael will know what the final decision should be.... The producer/s should have at least got his permission.

No comment on the video but should we not judge a video for the message it's trying to bring across and rip it apart if it's wrong instead of lumping the video's message along with any sort of political beliefs (be they fact or fantasy) together?

I took 21 minutes to watch the whole video and am glad that I did so. It frames the argument that leaks leveraged for political gain are damaging to our military personnel, their families, and our national security, with restraint and objectivity. Your photographic images, as good as they are, play only a very minor role in this video; in fact, they could have been left out or replaced with stock photography and the presentation would not have suffered for it. (It's a shame the producers didn't ask ahead of time for your permission; I suspect you would have granted it with attribution and that would have been the end of it.) The newsreel videos and video commentary by the participants are the backbone of this presentation, and the story is certainly significant. I hope you'll be gracious to the producer, recognizing there was no malice intended toward you (nor any real harm done to you either, right?) - and allow them to move on with their mission.
BTW, thanks for your expose of Soldiers' Angels and their exploitation of the ignorance of donors to their cause. I hope the information will motivate well intentioned military supporters to redirect their gifts to more worthy organizations, e.g., Wounded Warrior Project.
    Thanks for your work, Mike!

It's statements like you've made here Guy, that's pathetically ignorant...Any other conspiracy theories? Maybe the president is really an alien, but not from earth, maybe he represents an advanced race of intelligent beings, maybe turn humans who believe in stupid
      conspiracies into dog's for dinner.

Sorry, I think our soldiers being put in harms way because of security leaks is a more important issue than whether or not you're getting "monetary compensation" for the use of your photos.

Should they have asked first? Yes. Of course. I say this as a 2nd generation pro photog. Is suing them to get your cut the right response in this situation? Hell no. I think a more honorable response would be to ask for credit or to ask to be a part of their fight. Anything else just seems a bit self serving, don't you think?

I think you should support this anyway you can! Maybe just let the copyright thing go, considering their message and intent...
I'd be 100% behind you if they were making a profit or exploiting your work. They SHOULD have asked for permission first, but your photos really helped sell the message, dramatically!
Maybe you could consider it a donation and ask for a mention in the credits?
    Just one man's opinion.

Make it two men's opinion. Funny looking at all the nay sayers that look at the political parties instead of the message. Also agree they should have asked for your permission Michael before they used pics but the message is right on. Protect the soldiers/agents/informers instead of looking for political gain.

I am often allowing my work (photographs and images of my paintings) to be used for causes I believe are good for promoting the causes in which I believe: #1 my work with the Sea Turtles, #2 my community, would give you exposure for your work, or other causes I believe in. If you believe the message is in line with what you think then I would just insist on acknowledgement of the source, since it is copywrited material.

This video tells an important story of the leaks coming from Obama's White House. Any other citizen would be prosecuted for the same leaks. It's important for the American people to know what Obama is all about- his interests certainly do not lie with what is best for America.

That being said they should not have used your materal without permission. Hopefully they will rectify it.

    Otherwise, an important video.

Valerie Plame? · 9 years ago
Where was the outrage when the Bush administration leaked Valerie Plame for purely political reasons and likely caused the deaths of several CIA assets. Carl Rove pretty much was the criminal who did that because her husband reported back the truth, that there was no proof of Saddam Hussein procuring yellow cake. The MAIN ARGUMENT FOR GOING TO WAR WHERE MORE THAN 000 SERVICE MEMBERS DIED. This video has no proof but Rove gave up his aid Scooter Libby to take the fall. What I see here is a selection of video's that prove nothing but insinuate a boatload.

There was a ton of political outrage about the Valarie Plame episode. You would have to have your head in the sand not to see it. Now we need to investigate these leaks and punish the perpetrators to protect this country. Hate all the partisan posturing. Do what is right for the country regardless of party!

This is a political video if Bush had killed him they would be saying how good he was. But Obama did what was needed by going after him, which Bush had stopped looking for him. We would not have gotten him if the Commander in Chief had not went after him. Bush had stopped looking for him. Obama went after him so he was the guy that got him.

I think you missed the whole point of the video. It's about leaking information about how the Military goes about doing their jobs. Leaking information that the enemy can use to change what they are doing!
BTW....Obama had nothing to do with Osama Bin Laden's capture.....

rcrogers6. you hit the nail on the head. Well done! The ignorance and stupidity of some of these posts passeth all understanding! From "obama had nothing to do with his capture" yeah, he was not on the mission, but he authorized it, that's the point hopelessly missed! Almost every "disclosure" was either in the public domain or not Opsec relevant. Anybody with a reasonable reading list and some common sense will see this video for what it is... another puerile attack on a president to whom they are politically opposed. Stay out of politics, you guys, it only demeans you. I'll give you a leak that really cost lives when the BBC disclosed that the Argentinians in the Falklands war were not fusing their bombs properly. A mistake they quickly corrected!

I just watched the video, and it is certainly compelling. Hopefully, Mr Yon's photo can be edited out, and a mutual understanding worked out.
For their sincerity, the timing certainly gives it the feel of an anti-Obama attack ad.
Re Valery Plume, she was an office worker, and no one died because her name came up in an interview--nice try, tho.

Like your books-photos and comments Mike. You should edit these comments however. Allowing this comment that is signed by Valerie Plame ? to stand is beyond the pale. Everyone that has not assumed room temperature and follows, truly follows current events knows that it was Richard Armitage under the tutelage of Gen Powell that caused that Miscarriage of justice.

    in_awe · 9 years ago
Of course the REAL source in 200 of Valerie Plame's name was Assistant Secretary of State Richard Armitage. It was only later conformed by Colin Powell. The minions in the Special Attorney's office knew this from sworn testimony from Armitage who was told to stay silent on the matter. This of course allowed Democrats to run their witch hunter while fully aware of the truth.

Since the only charge ever brought was an obstruction of justice against Scooter Libby. Given that revealing the names of active CIA assets is punishable under federal statute and nobody was ever charged with that, it is clear that Plame was not considered an employee qualified for that protection.

Try Googling about the statements by prominent Democrats in the 1990's that state that regime change in Iraq was necessary due to Saddam's policies, possession of large numbers of weapons of mass destruction, and an "imminent threat" to the US and other nations.

      rcrogers6 · 9 years ago
The fact that Armitage and others were not prosecuted is bad for security and justice. Let me see, was there a Democratic President in office at the time? Why no, it was President Bush. The CIA had Plame classified as a covert agent and used those grounds to try and convince Novak not to publish. Nope, this wasn't Democrats dropping the ball, this was Republicans stealing it.

Mr. Yon, I have always enjoyed your work.
And hope you continue to try to present Honest facts.
The story about OPSEC being violated Is a bit more important then credit for your photo, or monetary compensation.
It is only my opinion, but I think they make it clear, this group would stand against any pol. violating OPSEC for politics, be he elephant or ass.
